The ask

Build a returnable travel-documentary format around cities rather than countries — one that could be shot to a European free-to-air standard, in territories a German or Australian crew could not reach economically, on a schedule that would let RTL slot Season 1 without waiting on a long international recce cycle.

The commission required a partner who could already work in Asia-Pacific: crewed, permitted, and fluent in the practicalities of shooting in dense urban environments where access is granted locally, not from head office.

The approach

SD Media came into the partnership as the field production arm across our home territories, working to WildBear's series architecture and RTL's editorial specification.

Each city is built around the same structural spine — a returnable format rather than a set of one-off travelogues — so that a viewer who knows the show in Hong Kong can pick it up anywhere and a commissioner can plan a second season without renegotiating the idea.

We shoot with small, senior teams. In a city like Hong Kong that is not a cost compromise, it's an editorial one: a five-person unit gets into kitchens, markets, workshops and homes that a full crew never sees.

The execution

Hong Kong was among the Season 1 shoots delivered by SD Media, produced under our standing Asia-Pacific crew and fixer network with local permitting handled in territory.

The outcome

Season 1 is in production and headed to RTL Germany, with international distribution through Off the Fence and InsightTV.

For SD Media the significance is structural rather than editorial: 48 Hours is the proof that a European free-to-air broadcaster and a tier-one Australian factual producer will place a returnable series with this studio — and that we can plug into someone else's format bible and deliver against it.
